Abortions! Abortions! Abortions!

"Hell No You Can't"

This budget discussion is no longer about the budget — nor the deficit, nor jobs.  The Republican’s have made it an ideological fight, halting any progress we have made in the last few years and any chance for progress this year.  A government shutdown is no longer a possibility, but inevitable.  In under 24 hours, the government will shut down for the first time in fifteen years all because Republican’s are upset about women’s health and Planned Parenthood.  That’s right.  The Republican’s will shut down the entire government because it does not want federal funds to go to Planned Parenthood.

I get why people are pro-life.  I don’t agree with it, but I respect their opinion.  However, I do not support any politicizing of this issue, in an effort to cripple our democracy, especially over a 40+ year old issue that will never be overturned.  Furthermore, I disagree with targeting an organization like Planned Parenthood, a victim of a Republican witch hunt, all the while this agency has been responsible for providing a great service to low-income women that would not otherwise be provided anywhere else.

I have talked about this issue before and it may seem redundant but the Republican’s have gone so far to the right

United States Capitol

and so desperate to staying relevant to their base, they will go to such lengths as putting a stop to funding our government. Under obvious criticism from the Tea Party, this ideological and social argument, is just the ammunition Speaker Boehner is willing to utilize in order to make a deal with a group like the “tea baggers,” if only to win a couple of votes.

We have no idea how long this shutdown will last.  From what I understand, it could be a couple days to several weeks.  But we have been here before.  We all  know what happened the last time.  President Clinton won re-election and the Democrats took back Congress.  Seriously…it’s this easy, Progressives!!!  Most of the Republican’s remember what happened in the late 90s and why they are willing to go back down this path is beyond me.  But their are Democrats and Progressives who remember, too.  If Republican’s are this dumb to go back down this road, then the Democrats better be smart enough to take this move for what it is.  #Winning

In the meantime, here we are…government shutdown looming and our quest for some sanity begins (once again).

You are dead-on in your post, my friend. Maddow made a good point the other day about the difference between now and then. Back then, Newt was the target and was as well-known as The President. Right now, there’s no obvious target, and that needs to be the talking point for Dems: everyone on-message, all the time, specific in what the shutdown will do to working Americans and that the GOP is to blame. They’d get more folks on their side and satisfy the base, plus the blame would go where it belongs.

Terrific post – nice work, Girlfriend.

Thanks again, friend! I guess we’re one in the same — the GOP gives us a lot of material to work off of 🙂 Yes, I agree with you and @maddow completely, Boehnor doesn’t have the pull that Newt did, so that’s refreshing. Yet I’m still unsure as to why there are still people out there who insist that the GOP really cares about their rights, particularly those who call themselves, tea party patriots. The GOP has shown us time and time again that they do not care about “small government,” what they care about is using their role in government to get their millions when they’re all done with the government.

Keep trucking on! We’ll see what the next few hours brings us.
